The Russian Hack
Whether or
not the Russian government hacked our 2016 election resulting in the election
of Donald Trump is true, I only have one questions: why the outrage?
Now, I am
certainly not saying it is okay for Russia to do something like that. Far from
it. However, is the United States really in any position to show moral
indignation over a foreign government doing something like that to our
democratic process when America in the past has literally assisted in the
overthrow of democracies in order to install dictatorships?
A prime
example is Operation Ajax. People wonder why our relationship with the Islamic
Republic of Iran is so turbulent. Well in 1953 the United States used the
Central Intelligence Agency along with British intelligence (MI6) to overthrow
the government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in order to install a
monarch named Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, also known as the Shah (King)
And why did we do this? To make a long story short, Prime
Minister Mosaddegh saw that the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (a British
corporation) and their control over Iranian oil reserves was not benefitting
the Iranian people. So, the Prime Minister and the Iranian Parliament decided
to nationalize the oil industry and expel foreign corporate representatives.
Iran would no longer allow foreign corporations to pump oil out of Iran, sell
it on the global market and not share the profits with the Iranian people.
The British responded by organizing a worldwide boycott
of Iranian oil in an attempt to pressure Iran economically. It didn’t work. So,
Winston Churchill and good old President Eisenhower decided to organize a coup
to overthrow a democratic government in order to install a dictatorship. The
democratic process in Iran didn’t matter. It was overthrown. It was over. People
died. Lives were destroyed. And the future was changed.
In the long run, the new leadership in Iran didn’t fare
well. In 1979 there was a revolution. The Shah had fled Iran and ended up dying
in Egypt. The United States Embassy was taken over by and American hostages
were held for 444 days. The government in Iran now is most likely there because
of our interference. And we want to act with indignation when we learn that
Russia may have interfered in our elections?
