The Misled Generation
I grew up on 300+ acre horse farm
in Maryland. My Dad's employer was fairly well off. We had enough to get by,
and maybe a little more once in a while for a trip somewhere. My parents never
used credit cards. We had come back to America in 1975 and Dad paid cash for a
1967 Plymouth Valiant that had 53,000 miles on it (almost a death sentence for
cars in that era, but the 225 cu in. Mopar engine never quit) $1,000 got us our
family car that he drove from 1975 to 1990 when he finally took her off the
road. We didn't have much, but like most families we dreamed of being rich.
Dad went to the 8th grade and
left Melbourne for Tasmania to ride steeplechase. He didn't learn a trade. He
didn't become an entrepreneur in the traditional sense. And he didn't work for
government. He entered a profession where you either prosper, or you scrape by.
He scraped by. He could have done something else with his life. Nobody is
forced to work in the horse game. But his income did match his skills. Riding races
is one thing and it certainly does take skill to take a 1,000-pound animal over
the jumps at nearly 30 miles per hour. But after your riding career is over,
you’re typically left with the choice of becoming a trainer or back to being a
groom. Dad went back to being a groom. There’s not a lot of money in that.
Never has been and likely never will be.
But one thing I can say my father
never did when he came home from work at 5:30 pm, six days a week was bash his
employers for having money. He was an opinionated man (if there was any of you
wondering where I get it from) and he may have had some choice opinions about
some other things. But never once did he imply that the rich were rich because
he wasn’t. He never said "if they only paid more income taxes, we'd be
doing just fine" And he never said that it was unfair.
What is the current generation
being taught that they seem to have the complete opposite view of the world? If
you listen to the youth of today, everything should be free. College….free!
Medical care….free! Student loan debt….forgiven and wiped out. And my personal
favorite, universal basic income…..mandatory regardless of what you do. Want to
stay home playing video games and smoking weed? That’s okay. Because some Democrat
is going to tell you that they will make sure you receive a bare minimum of
$1,000 in cash per month that you never have to pay back. Really? Taxpayers
have to pay people $1,000 a month for doing nothing and with no obligation on
the recipient’s part to make themselves a better person? Does that sound like a
one-sided obligation?
It seems like this current generation
is being told that they have all these rights, yet nobody seems to be telling
them about responsibilities. Not only that, they are being misled into thinking
that rights are things owed to you by the government. They aren’t. You have
rights to anything that the government doesn’t have a right to take from you……….like
free speech. What a misled generation they are.
